Math 230 – Fundamental Concepts II
Dr. Harel Barzilai – Spring 2012
§3 (TuTh 12:30 - 1:45)  //  §4 (TuTh 2:00-3:15)  //  §5 (MoWe 3:00-4:15)
All sections meet in HS 115,

I. Two things all students must do during first week:

  • Hand in a photocopy of your student ID. This will aid me in the process of learning the names and faces of students.
  • Make sure you can recieve emails at your students.salisbury.edu account, where class announcements will be sent; you're expected to either check it regularly throughout the week, or have mail forwarded to an email address you check regularly.

II. Important Information about Course Requirements and Policies which you need to print and read:

  • My schedule (including Office Hours) and other useful information are at Courses page. (or directly: here)
  • You probably will also want to read some of the various "success in math" (and especially the Math Fable) links on the Courses page.

    Critical Handouts:

    1. Syllabus & Information for our section (paper copy was given in class)
    2. Carefully read the Course Policies (e.g. exam policies, tardiness..don't find out "after the fact"!)
Make sure you read all Course handouts.
You are responsible for knowing all policies in both above documents!

[Less important: official Departmental Syllabus (PDF) for all sections of this course; it has rough outline of topics]
  • See: Other Important/Useful Links

Key topics: Geometry; Measurement; Decimal/Percents/Proportions; Mathematical Modeling.

Someone on a mailing list shared these discussions with elementary school kids. What do you like about the interaction? What is problemmatic about the interactions? There are many issues for your Methods course, but Math 230 is a Content course. One issue that comes up for content relates to definitions. How important are definitions? For the teacher? For the child? Is the child given a definition? Where or how? Is that important? Two short vidoes:

  • Which Shapes are Triangles?

  • which is a rectangle?
