UMTYMP Calculus I, Harel Barzilai (Instructor) with John Hall (TA).
[John and Harel keep track of student usage of the various things we try]

Week 0:
Thu., Jan 8: Assign: Students should log in and send a "hi" message.

Week 1:
Tue., Jan 13: Talk to students about their success/problems getting on and using the sytem (i.e., the WebCT pages specific to this class).

Announce HW Hints page & Math Jokes page which will be updated regularly. Announce upcoming online help session by John (impossible for this week due to John's going to a confernce).

Thu., Jan 15: Again talk to students about their success/problems getting on and using the sytem, iron out remaining problems.

Students assigned to Post a "Hi" message on newsgroup, and preferably to ask a math question they would like answered or to list a concept they would like to understand better

Hints for selected problems from the HW due next week put on hint page; first joke put online.

Week 2:
Tue. Jan 20: Online help session (probably 7-8pm)

Thu. Jan 22: Hints for selected problems from the HW due next week put on hint page; jokes page updated.

Students asked to comment on online help sessions, hints, and email/newsgroup.

Week 3:
Same as Week 2, attempting to increase number of students who participate in online help sessions. Also trying to get students to post questions publicly in b-board for others to help them with and/or for topics they'd like to be reviewed (lecture) and/or worked on (activities) in class.

Formal (written, passed out in class) feedback form filled out by students this week (or week 4 if students are slower to get connected properly)

Weeks 4-6:
Same as preceeding weeks, with several (additional) modules from the following list being tested for (i) technical installation (ii) tracking of student use (iii) student feedback (iv) assessment of pedagogical value:

  • Online Review Sheet(s).
  • Online self-test(s).
  • Online Quizzes.
  • Links to WWW calculus resources.
  • Online chat.
