Dear [Name]

It is our pleasure to congratulate you on your having met the
requirements for, and having earned, the diploma of advanced study
called the "Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Middle School
Mathematics" from Salisbury University.

This letter is to recognize formally your achievement (paperwork has
already been initiated for your subscription to Mathematics Teaching
in the Middle Schools as part of a 1-year NCTM membership; your copy
of Standards 2000, and your stipend. Look for a form in the mail to
sign and return for that stipend).

Additional copies of these letters are being enclosed as well, so that
you may share them with your Mathematics Supervisor and/or Principal,
to whom the following is addressed:

Dear Administrator:

The above named teacher, who has earned the Post-Baccalaureate
Certificate in Middle School Mathematics, has done so by taking four
or more courses in Math ADEPT, the Allied Delmarva Enhancement Program
for Teachers.

Initially funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), Math ADEPT
is an intensive program of integrated mathematics content courses
offered for graduate credit by the Department of Mathematics and
Computer Science at Salisbury University (SU). The ADEPT courses
deepen the mathematics content background of teachers while modeling
and encouraging best-practice pedagogical approaches -- such as
writing assignments in mathematics, groupwork, manipulatives,
appropriate technology for both mathematical exploration and for
instruction, project assignments, and presentation at the board. ADEPT
courses may be taken as stand-alone courses, as credit towards the
Certificate and/or as credit towards a Master of Science in
Mathematics Education (http://www.salisbury.edu/community/adept/ ).

In addition, each teacher participating in each ADEPT course also
completes a Modified Lesson Plans (MLPs) assignments in which the
teacher revisits and improves both content and pedagogy from a lesson
plan, related to that ADEPT course, based on the instruction and input
from the SU faculty instructor leading that ADEPT course, and from
discussions and input from fellow teachers enrolled in that ADEPT
course. A teacher who has earned the Certificate has therefore worked
to gain mathematical content and standards-based pedagogy, and to
revisit and improve their lesson plans in at least four mathematics
content areas.

We are writing to you as the co-Directors of the ADEPT program so that
this teacher can be recognized for the hard work, dedicated efforts,
and self-improvement this achievement represents. While a total of
eight courses are available through ADEPT and teachers are encouraged
to continue their professional development over time, the earning of
the Certificate is a significant milestone that we hope the school
systems will recognize, reward, and encourage.

Sincerely,

Drs. Homer W. Austin and Harel Barzilai
